No Doubt

This Southern California Grammy-award winning ska punk quartet has been one of the most popular bands of the past 15 years, however, they had their modest start when it was Eric Stefani (keyboards), his sister Gwen (vocals), and Eric’s friend John Spence (lead vocals), followed by Tony Kanal (bass), Tom Dumont (guitar), and Adrian Young (bass). After Spence’s death in 1987 (he would not appear on any of the band’s albums) and Eric’s departure in 1994 to continue work on the animated sitcom The Simpsons, it would be just Gwen, Kanal, Dumont, and Young by the time they would hit their mainstream stride with the multiplatinum Tragic Kingdom in 1996.

No Doubt’s sound is heavily based and influenced by Jamaican ska and Jamaican culture in general; prominent Jamaican music artists Lady Saw and Bounty Killer have appeared on No Doubt’s albums. No Doubt is credited for being the leader of the ska revival of the 1990s just as one of their influences, Fishbone, had been in the mid to late 1980s.

Gwen Stefani has a significant career outside No Doubt; she occasionally is an actress, does work in the field of fashion design, and as of 2004, a successful solo artist with the release of her successful pop album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Nonetheless, despite many rumors, No Doubt has not broken up; they are currently working on their newest album, set out for release in 2007.
